In the Wisdom View, vocational discernment is guided by practical Christian wisdom applied broadly across personal and professional areas.
Means of discernment
Reason is one way in which God provides wisdom for discernment, as are Scripture and prayer. Direct supernatural revelation is less emphasized; any experience of a direct calling should be carefully discerned.
Community is an important part of wise discernment, and community needs are part of the discernment process. There may be a special focus on the needs in your church community, but also a wider consideration of the needs of others. Almost any role can glorify God equally well, provided it is done with a heart of love, integrity, and a desire to please God.
Example
A Christian discerning their career through the Wisdom View may reflect on their strengths, values, and experiences while also seeking counsel from wise, trusted mentors. They may consider how their work can best serve their community, using both reason and prayer to guide their decision.
Comparison with the CFI View
Like the Wisdom View, CFI’s view on career discernment encourages the use of many different tools of discernment. Scripture and prayer are important. Impact is not emphasized in the same way in the Wisdom View as it is in the CFI view. The CFI emphasizes that, while almost any role can glorify God, evidence shows that some roles are (on average) more impactful than others.
